Universal life insurance sits between term and whole life, offering permanent coverage with more flexibility. Here's a thorough explanation.

What Is Universal Life Insurance?
Universal life (UL) is a type of permanent life insurance that combines a death benefit with a cash value account — similar to whole life. The key difference: you can adjust your premium payments and death benefit over time (within limits).

How the Cash Value Works
Premium payments go toward the cost of insurance and into a cash value account that earns interest based on current market rates (with a guaranteed minimum, typically 2–3%). When market rates are high, you accumulate cash value faster.

Types of Universal Life
- Traditional Universal Life: Interest rate tied to the insurer's portfolio. Predictable but modest growth.
- Indexed Universal Life (IUL): Cash value growth linked to a stock market index (like the S&P 500) with a floor (usually 0%) and a cap.
- Variable Universal Life (VUL): Cash value invested in sub-accounts (like mutual funds). Higher growth potential but also investment risk.

The Flexibility Advantage
Unlike whole life with rigid premiums, UL lets you:
- Increase or decrease premium payments
- Adjust your death benefit
- Skip premiums if cash value covers the insurance cost

The Risks
If the policy isn't funded adequately (especially with IUL or VUL), it can lapse — leaving you without coverage. Regular policy reviews are essential.

Who Is It For?
Business owners, high-income earners, those with estate planning needs, or anyone who values flexibility and wants permanent coverage. Not ideal for those who only need pure income replacement.
