Frequently asked questions
When should I sign up for Medicare?
You have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period starting 3 months before your 65th birthday month. Enroll in the 3 months before your birthday month to avoid a gap in coverage.
What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?
Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare and usually has lower premiums but a provider network. Medigap supplements Original Medicare, allowing you to see any Medicare-accepting doctor nationwide, but has higher premiums.
Is Medicare Advantage really $0 per month?
Many MA plans have $0 premium — meaning you pay no additional premium beyond your Part B premium. However, you still pay copays, coinsurance, and cost-sharing when you use care.
Can I change my Medicare plan every year?
Yes. During the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, switch to/from Original Medicare, and change your Part D plan.
Do I need a referral for specialists with Medicare?
With Original Medicare or Medigap, no referrals are needed. With a Medicare Advantage HMO, you typically need a referral. PPO-type MA plans usually allow self-referral to specialists.
How do I know if my drugs are covered?
Each Part D and Medicare Advantage plan has a formulary (list of covered drugs). Review your medications against the formularies of the plans available to you and confirm details before enrolling.
