The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Open Enrollment period is your annual window to enroll in or change your health insurance plan. Here's what you need to know.

When is Open Enrollment?
The federal ACA Open Enrollment period typically runs November 1 through January 15. State-based marketplaces (like Illinois, Maryland, and New York) may have different dates, and marketplace deadlines can change by coverage year. Confirm the current dates with your marketplace.

Who Can Enroll?
Anyone who doesn't have access to affordable employer-sponsored coverage or government programs like Medicaid or Medicare may enroll during Open Enrollment.

Do You Qualify for Subsidies?
Many people who shop the ACA marketplace may qualify for financial assistance. Premium Tax Credits can reduce monthly costs for eligible households, but income thresholds and subsidy rules can change by coverage year. Check the current marketplace calculation rather than relying on an older estimate.

What Plans Are Available?
ACA plans are organized into four metal tiers:
- Bronze: Lowest premium, highest out-of-pocket costs (best if you rarely use healthcare)
- Silver: Moderate premium, moderate out-of-pocket (best for most people; only tier eligible for Cost-Sharing Reductions)
- Gold: Higher premium, lower out-of-pocket
- Platinum: Highest premium, lowest out-of-pocket
