When people think of health insurance, they often assume employer group coverage is always the best option. But that's not always true. Here's a side-by-side comparison.

Group Health Insurance (Employer-Sponsored)
Offered through your employer. The employer typically pays a portion of your premium (often 70โ€“80% for employee-only coverage). Plans are negotiated by your employer and may not give you much choice.

*Pros:* Employer contribution lowers your cost, payroll deduction is pre-tax, guaranteed issue (can't be denied)
*Cons:* You lose coverage when you leave the job, limited plan choice, may not cover dependents affordably

Individual Health Insurance (ACA Marketplace)
Plans purchased directly through the federal or state ACA marketplace. You pay the full premium โ€” but may qualify for Premium Tax Credits based on income.

*Pros:* Portable (stays with you regardless of employment), potentially lower cost with subsidies, more plan options, year-round SEPs for life events
*Cons:* No employer contribution, must manage enrollment yourself

When Individual Coverage Might Beat Group
- Your employer's plan is poor quality or has a very high employee contribution
- Your income qualifies for significant Premium Tax Credits
- You want a specific doctor or hospital not in the group plan network
- You're self-employed or have variable income

The Comparison Test
When deciding whether to take employer coverage or shop the marketplace, compare: (1) your share of the premium, (2) the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, and (3) whether your preferred doctors are in-network.
