Once you're enrolled in Medicare, you have a critical choice: keep Original Medicare and add a Medigap supplement, or switch to Medicare Advantage. Both reduce your out-of-pocket costs โ but in very different ways.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Medicare Advantage plans replace Original Medicare and are offered by private insurers. They bundle Part A, Part B, and usually Part D (drugs) into one plan. Most include extras like dental, vision, and hearing.
*Pros:* Often $0 or low monthly premium, includes extras, predictable copays
*Cons:* Usually limited to a network of doctors, requires referrals in HMO plans, coverage varies by county
Medigap (Medicare Supplement)
Medigap plans work alongside Original Medicare and pay many of the costs Medicare doesn't โ like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. You keep your freedom to see any Medicare-accepting doctor nationwide.
*Pros:* See any doctor who accepts Medicare, no networks, predictable costs, great for travelers
*Cons:* Higher monthly premiums, usually doesn't include drug coverage (need separate Part D)
Key Differences at a Glance
- Networks: Advantage has networks; Medigap has none
- Premiums: Advantage typically lower; Medigap typically higher
- Extras: Advantage often includes dental/vision; Medigap typically doesn't
- Freedom: Medigap offers nationwide provider access; Advantage is usually regional
